Happy Sheela na Gig day! The ancient Irish fertility goddess- the sheela na gig- has been an inspiration throughout my music for so many years. Her imagery has inspired some of my album covers and whenever I can, I try to find some of her statues hidden around Ireland.

During the time of Imbolc, the goddess Brigid is often honoured at the holy wells associated with her as a goddess and saint.

Holy wells are some of what I find to be the most interesting historic sites in Ireland. They are sites once honoured by our ancient ancestors, as the sources of life and healing, associated with various gods and goddesses. These have continually been sacred places, even after they were converted to Christian sites. But I observe that these sites are just sacred places of the earth, no matter how culture has evolved around them to try to label them.

Today is “women’s Christmas”, which is a day that honours the women of Ireland… I am proud to be part of the lineage of women in my family- I’m so grateful for all my wonderful cousins in Ireland and all the kindness they’ve shown me. I’m also proud to know I come from very strong women of the past who survived so much.

I am also proud to be part of a culture that has a deep lineage in honouring the goddesses of the land. So here I am at the “naval of Ireland” at the Hill of Uisneach (with one of my cousins and most favourite people in the world.) This is the place that represents the womb of the goddess Ériu, who is the land of Ireland, from which we all come.

Thank you so much for all the support of our new album “In the Forest Singing Sorrowless”, our tribute to the poetry of Tolkien.

One of the songs “Finduilas” is a song about the backstory of Faramir and Boromir’s mother Finduilas, as referenced in the appendix of “The Lord of the Rings”.
This song is close to my heart, because it tells a very raw tale of grief. She died when Faramir was 12, and the song speaks of the terrible absence and grief created in her loss. It is a companion song to my song “Faramir”, about Faramir falling in love with Eowyn. When Faramir fell for Eowyn, he gifted her his mother’s cloak, that looked like the night sky. I always got the sense that Faramir found someone who he would have been so proud to have introduced to his mother, so this gesture was very meaningful and perhaps healed some of his heart ache.

So, “Finduilas” is a special song, that tells the story of the loss of a mother and “Faramir” tells the story of the healing love he experiences later. Writing these songs helped me with some of my own griefs about loss and it makes me appreciate how meaningful Tolkien’s writing is.

For this album, I wrote original music to J.R.R. Tolkien’s poems. The album title is a quote from Tolkien’s poem “Beren and Lúthien” about the tragic love story between a man and an elf. Tolkien describes the forest as a haven from the sorrows of the world, where love can flourish. This idea connected deeply to me, as love and nature feel like sanctuaries from the world’s sorrows.

One of the things that connected me to this poem by J.R.R. Tolkien was his description of the elven afterlife as a place where ideas are instantly manifested:
“I sang of leaves and the leaves there grew
Of wind I sang and the branches blew…”

This reminded me of how the ancient Irish described the afterlife of Tír Tairngiri, the place of promise, where thoughts became instant realities.

Also, I am in love with this hawk who I sang to in this video. It was such a curious and sweet soul, who seemed to like listening to me.

I chose to write this whole album (out Oct 31), from Tolkien’s poetry, because I have always found great hope and encouragement from his works. I personally was going through a challenging time this last year, while I was working in the album. I was going through treatments for breast cancer, and Tolkien’s writings always made me feel inspired and determined to make it through a tough journey.
